Description

Setting goals for this year – an oral language workout targeting categories, subjunctive language (If I were), infinitives (I want to), modal verbs (could/should/would), calendar knowledge, and planning.

Many children have difficulties using language to consider alternatives and to plan for future events. Setting goals, reading a calendar, and making the right decisions to pursue goals can be very difficult for many children.

Although typically developing children start using modal verbs like “could”, “would” and “should”, and simple infinitives like “want to”, at around 3 years of age, many don’t – including some children with language and learning disorders, and some children who are learning English as an additional language. Lots of children also have difficulties using the subjunctive “were”, as in “If I were to…”.

In this 20 page no-prep, fully scripted language workout, we model goal-setting, recognising and interpreting a calendar, making decisions when faced with options, and planning events. We model and provide focused stimulation for modal verbs, infinitives, and use of the subjunctive. To aid comprehension and to provide increased background knowledge about the world, we model language in the context of functional categories including pets, holiday destinations, musical instruments, occupations, creepy-crawlies, and community activities that help people.

The perfect language workout to get the year off to a good start!
