Description

Around the age of 4-5 years of age, typically developing children start to understand and use “neither…nor” sentences. “Nor” is a compound conjunction used to create conjoined sentences. “Neither” is used before the first – and “nor” is used before the second (or additional) – alternative or option to show that they are both untrue or both did not happen. For example:

“The cat drank neither orange juice nor Coke.”

The use of neither/nor shows that the cat does not drink:

    • orange juice; or
    • Coke.

In other words, it would be untrue to say that the cat drinks orange juice. It would also be untrue to say that the cat drinks Coke.  (The cat probably drinks milk instead.)
