Between 42-48 months of age, typically developing children start to use infinitives in their sentences, e.g.:

  • The boy wanted to eat an apple.
  • The girl wished to dance a waltz.
  • Mum tried to bake a cake.

As the examples illustrate, these sentences include at least two verbs and the grammatical form “to [verb]”. The verb is always in its basic or “simple” form, e.g. eat, drink, hunt, etc.
