At around 36-42 months of age, typically developing children start to use the pronouns “us” and “them”.

Us” is used by the speaker to refer to himself or herself and one or more other people as the object (e.g., “The bird belongs to us” or “Give the ball to us”).

Them” is used to refer to two or more people (not including the speaker) as the object (e.g., “The house belongs to them” or “Give it to them”).

Some children and adults need additional practice to learn “us” and “them”, including some children with language and learning disorders, some people with autism spectrum disorder, and some people learning English as an additional language.
