DLD: A FREE Guide for Families – 4th edition out today! [download]

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is common.

But – compared with neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, ADHD, and learning disorders – DLD is still not well known.

Back in 2020, we created a DLD guide for families.

It included Plain English answers to our most frequently asked questions about DLD.

Since then:

  • researchers and clinicians have done lots of great work to improve awareness about DLD and support for people with DLD;
  • organisations like RADLD, The DLD Project, NAPLIC, Moor House, DLD and Me, and Engage with DLD have done a tremendous amount of work to spread the word, and to share useful information and resources globally; and
  • children, teenagers and adults with DLD and their families have shared their incredible stories while advocating for better awareness  and more services.

Today – for DLD Day 2025 – we’re thrilled  to release the 4th edition of our DLD Guide for Families: updated and free!

What’s in it:

Plain English information, sorted by sub-topic – 135+ evidence-based articles from our website.

DLD basics – what is it, what to watch for, and how to seek help.

Help at different ages – evidence-based supports for late talkers, preschoolers, school-age children, teenagers, and adults.

Help with different needs – vocabulary, word associations, phonology, morphology, sentence syntax, social use of language, language comprehension, higher level language, and more.

DLD + reading and writing challenges – dyslexia, dysgraphia, the science of reading and writing, evidence-based supports and accommodations.

DLD + other  challenges – ADHD, working memory challenges, auditory processing disorder, speech sound disorders, hearing issues, emotional and behavioural challenges, sleep challenges, and more.

Beyond medical models – strength-based approaches, family-centred care, functional goal-setting, increasing communication participation and confidence, real world gains.
